Here is the story of the architectural projet that Driss Benabdallah and I carried out for Malhoun Art Space in Marrakech, which has allowed us to learn and reflect on heritage, architecture, crafts and contemporary art in Morocco.

In the framework of the participation of Le 18 Marrakech in documenta 15, we wanted to reflect on what an oasis would look like in Kassel. The workshop, OASE KASSEL was organised with Laila Hida (Le 18), Iswanto Hartono (ruangrupa, the colectif selected by documenta for the artistic direction of the 15th edition), Renée Tribble (head of the Urban Design Unit at Dortmund University) and Markus Ambach. Among the activities we developed during the 5 days, there was a presentation of what is an oasis and a conversation about the need of considering the oases as an urban development model in Kassel. Gathering proposed by A. George Bajalia, Laila Hida, Francesca Masoero & Carlos Pérez Marin in the framework of the participation of Le 18 in documenta fifteen in Kassel (Germany) in August 2022.
This conversation brings together the initiators of various cultural initiatives and projects (such as Le 18 , Qanat , Youmein Festival , Caravane Tighmert, Caravane Ouadane and Project Qafila) to reflect on the lessons learnt from collective wanderings, wonderings and workshops developed in Northwest Africa over the last decade.

In 2002 we discovered the gate of the city of Ceuta during the 10th century, it was inside the Portuguese fortification called as Royal Wall. 20 years later, a book compile all the research done since the discovery. One of the chapter is related to how we found this gate, this is the STORY OF AN EVENT.
En 2002 descubrimos la puerta de la ciudad de Ceuta durante el siglo X, estaba dentro de la fortificación portuguesa llamada Muralla Real. 20 años después, un libro recopila toda la investigación realizada desde el descubrimiento, uno de los capítulos está relacionado con cómo encontramos esta puerta, esta es el RELATO DE UN ACONTECIMIENTO.

Between October and November 2021 we did Qafila Khamisa, the 5th caravan since we started Project Qafila, a practical research on caravans (and many other things). We went from Chinguetti to Tidjikja (Mauritania), a 280 km trek we did in 13 days. You will find all the information clicking on the image.

In three weeks it will take place the first edition of Caravane Ouadane in the Mauritanian city of Ouadane that we organise with some Mauritanian and Moroccan friends. But how and why we decided to do this cultural event in such a place, so far from my city. This are the explanations of a personal process that took years and that it is not yet finished.

Cuando surgen las crisis, las sociedades y sus ciudadanos tienen que reaccionar, reflexionando sobre sus causas y posibles soluciones, eso es lo que hemos hecho en el Instituto de Estudios Ceutíes con la publicación de Estrategias para el futuro de Ceuta, donde hemos analizado algunos de las aspectos en los que deberíamos centrarnos para salir de las crisis que se han ido superponiendo en los últimos años.
Para este nuevo número de Transfretana he escrito dos trabajos, uno que ya compartí (Ceuta y el autoabastecimiento energético) y Ceuta y su posicionamiento geográfico, sobre las posibilidades que nos ofrece nuestra situación geográfica y cómo podría afectar a nuestro urbanismo.
When crises arise, societies and their citizens have to react, reflecting on their causes and possible solutions, that is what we have done at the Instituto de Estudios Ceutíes with a publication (Strategies for the future of Ceuta) where we have analyse some of the aspects we think we should focus on getting out of the crises that have been overlapping in recent years.
I have written two papers, one I already shared (Ceuta and energy self-sufficiency) and Ceuta and its geographical positioning the possibilities that our geographical situation offers us and how it could affect our urban planning.

On September the 15th, 2021, the publication was presented at the State Public Library in Ceuta and broadcast live.

Some times it is important to self-questioning, specially when talking on cultural activities we propose in the desert, without a pattern or model to follow, but building one with our own means. You will find some thoughts on how we are learning to decode the desert through artistic (or non artistic) researches and activities.

caravane tighmert 2020. epilogues /
In December 2020 we organised the 6th edition of the artists gathering, Caravane Tighmert. After having postponed the original date ( in April), because of the pandemic, we decided to celebrate it after the fire that burnt a third of the oasis surface, as a signal of support for the inhabitants, even if only artists living in Morocco could participate.
I could not come to Morocco because borders were closed but after this special edition, we had a series of conversations with the 7 artists, talking about their experiences and their works, but also about many different subjects that use to interest participants (nomadism, agriculture, water irrigation, caravans…). We also dedicated some time to explain the stories behind some of the member of the team (Ghassan, Slama, Mohamed…).

Casi 18 años han pasado desde la primera vez que visité la parcela de Colmenar Viejo en Madrid donde estamos trabajando en el desarrollo del sector 9 Lavanderas.
En enero se aprobó inicialmente el Plan Parcial y aunque aún queda la aprobación definitiva, la redacción del Proyecto de Urbanización y la Dirección de Obras, después de todo lo que nos ha pasado tras todos estos años, es un gran paso adelante en un proyecto que para nosotros es muy especial.
Esta es la historia de todo el proceso creativo.

ceuta y la autosuficiencia energética /
A menudo se nos dice que muchos de los problemas de Ceuta se derivan de nuestras limitaciones geográficas y de la falta de recursos naturales. En temas energéticos no es cierto, tenemos recursos más que suficientes, pero hay que querer y saber aprovecharlos.
He aquí un análisis de esos recursos que hacen que la autosuficiencia energética de Ceuta no sea una utopía sino una realidad alcanzable.

Candidates (visual and performing artists) who want to participate in the 7th edition of Caravane Tighmert, which will take place from the 13th to the 21st March 2021, must send an email to caravanetighmert@gmail.com with the following information:
1 a link (website, Facebook page, Instagram, pdf, etc.) or a few representative images of your work.
2 a short text (not an artistic project) explaining your interest in this meeting, as well as the subjects on which your research will focus (maximum 150 words).
To avoid misunderstandings:
⥤ if you do not receive a receipt after sending your email to caravanetighmert@gmail.com it means we have not received it and you should send it again.
⥤ the deadline for sending the information will be December the 31st 2020 at midnight (Moroccan time). On January the 10th 2021, you will receive an email to let you know if you have been selected or not.
⥤ Caravane Tighmert is a laboratory for contemporary creation and it gives the opportunity to conduct workshops with the inhabitants of the oasis, to produce a work with materials found on the site or to do research on subjects related to the culture of the desert. Be careful, it is not a question of making an exhibition but of sharing thoughts, experiences, concerns ... around culture in places as special as Tighmert and its surroundings.
⥤ the organisation will host and feed the artists at inhabitant homes, but it will not pay the transport costs to Tighmert nor the production of the works, nor give pocket money.
⥤ the organisation reserves all rights to publish photos, videos and sound recordings taken during the artists' activities during the event.
