qafila rabiaa: episode 1 /  by Carlos Perez Marin

As a continuation of our practical research on caravans (in the framework of Project Qafila), we are already working on Qafila Rabiaa: Episode 1.


The first episode will be a short trek of 7 days (90 km) starting near Zagora and arriving to M’hamid El Ghizlane. Dates will be the last week of October or the first one of November. It has been thought to introduce some contemporary artists and researches to nomad life in the Saharan desert.

Conversation qui a eu lieu au centre culturel LE 18 à Marrakech le 17 avril 2019, avec les artistes Mohamed Arejdal, M'Barek Bouhchichi, Laila Hida, Claudia Triozzi et l’architecte Carlos Perez Marin, ayant fait l'expérience de la résidence Caravane Tighmert dans le passé et qui répondent aux questions de la contemporanéité du désert et de la place de la culture contemporaine dans la société marocaine.

Par ailleurs des étudiants des écoles d'art de Tétouan (INBA) et Paris-Cergy (ENSAPC) ont parlé de leurs expériences après l’atelier une semaine que nous avons organisé à Tighmert dans le cadre de Caravane Tighmert 2019 et de leur restitution (dessins, vidéos, installations, photographies et performance) montrée ce soir même au 18.

The 5th edition of Caravane Tighmert will take place next week in the oasis of Tighmert (Guelmim, Morocco), and it will have three parts, researches, visual and performing artists / music / art students from Tetouan (INBA) and Paris-Cergy (ENSAPC). These are the participants:

In September 2018, we (Abdeljalil Saouli, Gilles Aubry and myself) started to work on an artistic project in Moulay Bouchta Al Khamar, a village situated 75 km north of Fez. We met in Moulay Bouchta to explore the possibilities this place offer to contemporary culture, guided by Abdeljalil who grew up there and decided to come back and settle down after his studies at the art school of Tetouan (Institut National des beaux-arts de Tétouan).

Le 18 is an independent culture centre based in Marrakesh. Last week they presented a new publication on contemporary art with contributors that have participated to their multiples art activities. Its founder, Moroccan photographer Laila Hida, asked me to share my research on caravans, in the framework of Project Qafila, but from her own perspective, approaching the narration of my travel story by the fictionality that allows the internet tools.

On January the 25th with Younès we went to Moulay Bouchta Al-Khamar (Taounate), a visit to our friend and visual artist Abdeljalil Saouli and to the place where we will initiate in March, an artistic research program called SAKHRA (with Gilles Aubry and Abdeljalil himself). Malgré la manque de financement de la part des autorités locales et regionales (Commune Asrir-Tighmert, Province de Guelmim, Agence du Sud) nous nous sommes décidés à récupérer les concerts qui ont eu lieu pendant les trois premières éditions de Caravane Tighmert et que nous n’avons pas pu célébrer en 2018 à cause de l’argent. À cette époque nous n’étions pas vraiment conscients de l’importance que notre petit événement pouvait avoir parmi les jeunes musiciens de la région, notamment lors de l’édition de 2017 où des groupes de Tighmert, Guelmim et Sidi Ifni sont venus jouer à l’oasis.

Pour 2019 nous voulons donner l’opportunité aux musiciens de la région à se reproduire sur scène. Amateurs ou professionnels, jeunes ou âgés, musiques traditionnelles ou contemporaines (mais toujours en lien avec les cultures locales), tous auront l’opportunité de jouer le dimanche 31 mars entre 12h et 21h à l’oasis de Tighmert.

Les candidats qui veuillent participer devront envoyer un enregistrement de son, ou bien une vidéo, et le nom du groupe sur la page Facebook de Caravane Tighmert avant le 10 février. Vous recevrez une réponse pour vous rassurer que nous avons bien reçu la candidature. L’organisation ne payera pas ni la participation des musiciens, ni le transport, ni le séjour (on aimerait bien le faire mais nous ne disposons pas de budget). Le 28 février nous annoncerons les groupes retenus, en établissent deux catégories, la première pourra jouer 15 minutes et la deuxième 30.

Toute aide financier ou technique (équipement et techniciens) sera bienvenue car nous n’avons pas de budget.

بالرغم من عدم وجود تمويل من السلطات المحلية والإقليمية (جماعة اسرير نول لمطة ،المجلس الإقليمي بكلميم،مجلس جهة كلميم وادنون وكالة الجنوبية) قررنا هذه السنة أن نبرمج سهرات موسيقية على غرار السنوات الثلاث الاولى المنصرمة من مهرجان قافلة تغمرت و لأسباب عدم وجود الاعتمادات المالية و مانحين يهمهم دعم المجال الثقافي لم نستطع برمجة سهرات خلال النسخة الرابعة 2018 . في ذلك الوقت لم نكن ندرك حقا بأهمية كيف يمكن أن يكون حدث صغير له أهمية بين الموسيقيين الشباب من المنطقة، ولا سيما خلال طبعة 2017 حيث مجموعات من واحة تغمرت، كلميم ،سيدي إفني قدموا للمشاركة وغرف اجمل ما كان من الموسيقى بالواحة.

بالنسبة لسنة 2019 ، نريد أن نمنح الفرصة لموسيقيي المنطقة أن يبدعو على خشبة المهرجان. سواء كانوا هواة أو المحترفين، صغارا أو كبارا، موسيقى تقليدية او المعاصرة (ولكن ان تكون لها علاقة بالثقافة المحلية) الفرصة متاحة للجميع باللعب الأحد 31 مارس بين 12 و 21H في واحة تغمرت ،ساحة لخْميس (لعبيد)

يتعين على المرشحين الراغبين في المشاركة إرسال تسجيل صوتي أو مقطع فيديو واسم الفرقة إلى صفحة الفيسبوك الخاصة بـ Caravan Tighmert في موعد أقصاه 10 فبراير. سوف تتلقون إجابة لطمأنتك بأننا استلمنا الطلب. لن تدفع الجمعية تكاليف مشاركة أو نقل أو إقامة الموسيقيين (نود أن نفعل ذلك ولكن ليس لدينا ميزانية). في 28 فبراير سنعلن عن المجموعات المختارة ، وننشئ فئتين ، الأولى ستكون قادرة على لعب 15 دقيقة والثانية 30.

أي مساعدة مالية أو تقنية (المعدات والفنيين) ستكون موضع ترحيب لأننا لا نملك ميزانية.

qafila project analog pictures and videos /  by Carlos Perez Marin

When I started Project Qafila in 2016 I wanted to use only analog cameras, for pictures and for videos, in order to do not carry extra batteries or a solar charger. For Qafila Oula I used Sprocket Rocket and Lomokino cameras with different Ilford films (Hp5 plus 400, Delta 400 and XP2 400).

In 2017, for Beyond Qafila Thania, I used again the Sprocket Rocket and I tried a 16mm Bolex SBM but it stopped working from the second shot

In 2018, after sending the Bolex to be repaired, I could use it but it broke partially, being able to shot not more than 4 seconds during Qafila Thalitha:

For pictures I used for the first time a Leica M6 with Kodak Tri-X 400 TX films.

This year I had the chance to talk in Ceuta, Fez, Zagora, Bir Gandouz (Dakhla) and Marrakesh about Saharan caravans, architectural heritage, nomadism, territory and urban planning in the desert, water and contemporary culture.
